Managing the Server

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

Your workflow applications must be installed on a server containing specific applications and components, including Microsoft® SQL Server™ and a Web server. The server owner is responsible for setting up and maintaining the server. When the server is set up appropriately, the application owner uses the Workflow Designer for SQL Server administration tool, the Workflow Manager for SQL Server, for the overall setup and maintenance of the workflow applications.

While managing a server, the server owner has the following responsibilities:

  • Setting up the server   Installing and configuring the appropriate prerequisites and installing the Microsoft® Office XP Developer server components.

Note   When you install the server components, SQL Server should be installed and running in integrated security mode. The user installing Office Developer server components must be logged on as the system administrator on SQL Server.

  • Configuring server security   Creating SQL Server logins to grant users access to the databases on the server and setting Web permissions to control who has browse, authoring, or administrative permissions to create and access new databases and Web sites.

  • Maintaining server integrity   Backing up and restoring the application components, including the databases and the Web files.

While the server owner has responsibility for managing the server, the application owner is responsible for maintaining the individual workflow applications when they are installed.

Note   The Workflow Designer for SQL Server does not support the Microsoft® Windows NT® Server/Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server Roaming User Profiles feature in this release.
