Installing Addressing Objects

Installing Addressing Objects

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

Installing the new address type for your gateway requires the creation of two objects in Microsoft® Active Directory®: the Addr-Type object and the Address-Template object.

The Addr-Type object has an attribute, ms-Exch-Proxy-Generator-DLL, that is set to the file name of the proxy generation dynamic-link library (DLL) used to generate addresses for this address type. The Addr-Type object must be installed in order for the gateway to support its address type. The address template is technically optional, because it is not required for the execution of the gateway. It does, however, provide a friendly interface that enables an administrator or a Microsoft Outlook® user to create contacts for the foreign system. The Address-Template object includes the display table that describes the controls appearing on the dialog box for entering a new custom address.

The Address-Template object includes the display table custom address. The display table is generated by the binary template file described in Address Entry Template Binary Data.

To install new address type objects:

  • Create the proxy generation DLL file and copy it to your Microsoft Exchange Server Address directory:

    <Your Exchange Server install directory>\Address\<Your address type>\i386

  • Create the address template binary (.blt) and Address Syntax (.oel) files and install the Address-Template object in Active Directory.

  • Create and install the Addr-Type object in Active Directory.

Proxy Generation DLL

When you install an address type, you need to specify the proxy generation DLL that is associated with it. Exchange computes where the proxy generation DLL should be located and tries to extract version information from this file. If the appropriate directory for the proxy generation DLL does not already exist, you must create it. Copy the DLL into this directory. If Microsoft Exchange cannot find the DLL, it displays an error message.

The directory for the DLL is <Your Exchange Server install directory>\Address\<Your address type>\i386.

Addr-Type Object

A Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, AddrType.ocx, is supplied with the Exchange Software Development Kit (SDK). When you register this snap-in, it expands the namespace of the Exchange System Manager Recipients container to include an E-Mail Address Generators node. E-Mail Generators are a synonym for address types. You can right click on this node to bring up the property page for installing a new address type in Active Directory.

For an example of how to install a new address type, see Creating an Address Type and Address Space.

Address-Template Object

The Address-Template object can be installed using the ADDRTEMP sample application. This application creates the Active Directory object and uses the information in EDKSADT.OEL and EDKADT.BLT to fill in the address syntax and address display table attributes for the Address-Template object.

For an example of how to use ADDRTEMP to install the Address-Template object using the EDKADT.BLT and EDKADT.OEL files, see ADDRTEMP: Installing an Address Entry Template in Active Directory.

Keep in mind the following points when installing an Addr-Type object:

  • The Addr-Type object needs to be installed only once within each Exchange Server routing group. The address type information is available to all servers in the routing group.
  • The SMTP routing engine, a feature new to Exchange 2000 Server, determines the routing of messages dynamically. In other words, it gathers connector status information from Active Directory and, from this data, determines the best way to route a message at a particular time. A gateway address routing table (GWART) is no longer used to calculate gateway routes, so there is no longer any need to update such a table if you add, change, or delete addressing information. This includes adding a new Addr-Type object and generating proxy addresses. Proxy address generation is done automatically by the Recipient Update Service (RUS) when you add a new address type to a recipient policy. For more information, see Recipient Policies.
  • It is possible to install an Addr-Type object without an associated gateway.
