HD DVD Overview

This is preliminary documentation and subject to change.

HD DVD differs from DVD in that it supports enhanced interactive user experiences. The technology for authoring iHD content is based on widely recognized and accepted technologies such as XML, Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL), XPath, CSS, and ECMAScript.

One of the design goals of the iHD technology was for it to be recognizable to those who are familiar with Web page authoring.

An HD DVD experience is made up of one or more iHD applications. How to divide an HD DVD experience into different applications is entirely up to you.

A simple HD DVD might be broken up into the following separate applications:

  • the opening sequence and preview clip application
  • the main menu and primary video playback application
  • director's cut application

It might surprise you to see the main menu and video playback combined into one application. This makes it easier to call up the menu while watching the main video rather than having to stop playing the main video and then navigating back to the original spot, which is a common source of frustration for classic DVD users.
