How to: Display a Search Scope in the Search Box and Advanced Search Web Parts

Enterprise Search in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides you with the ability to create search scopes to group content items together based on common elements among the items in that scope. After you create search scopes, you can display them in the search user interface by adding them to the Search Box Web Part's scopes drop-down list and to the Advanced Search Web Part's scope list.

In this topic, you'll add the Products scope you created in Step 3: Create a Search Scope from Walkthrough: Configuring Search for the AdventureWorks Business Data Application Sample to the search user interface.

To complete the steps described in this topic, you must have site administrator permissions for the site you are modifying.

Though we recommend that you complete Step 3: Create a Search Scope so that you have a Products shared scope, you can complete the steps described here using any other search scope you have created.

To add the Products search scope to the scopes drop-down list for the Search Box Web Part

  1. In your browser, navigate to your site's home page.

  2. Click the Site Actions link, and then in Site Settings, click Modify All Site Settings.

  3. In Site Collection Administration, click Search scopes.

  4. Click Search Dropdown to open the Edit Display Group page.

  5. In the Scopes section, for Products, select Display.

  6. Click OK to save your changes.

To add the Products search scope to the displayed scopes for the Advanced Search Web Part

  1. In your browser, navigate to your site's home page.

  2. Click the Site Actions link, and then in Site Settings, click Modify All Site Settings.

  3. In Site Collection Administration, click Search scopes.

  4. Click Advanced Search to open the Edit Display Group page.

  5. In the Scopes section, select Display for Products.

  6. Click OK to save your changes.

Note

You may need to wait for a few minutes before the Products scope is displayed in existing instances of the Search Box and Advanced Search Web Parts. However, it should appear immediately for any new instances of these Web Parts you create.
