Visual Studio 2008

Beta 2

The Beta 2 release includes most of the products found in the Visual Studio product line. As with all prerelease software, we encourage you only to install these on a secondary machine, or in a virtual machine, as they are not supported by Microsoft Services support teams.

Files & Disc Images for Self-installation

If you prefer to install the software yourself, you can download separate disc images for the following products:

IMPORTANT:

  • After the Beta 2 installation has finished, you should run this script to ensure that the installation of .NET Framework 3.5 Beta 2 will not affect the development of ASP.NET AJAX 1.0 applications.

VPC Images with Pre-installed Software

If you prefer the convenience of evaluating prerelease software in a virtual machine environment, you can download VPC images for the following products that include pre-installed instances of the prerelease software indicated, including any required prerequisite software. You will need Virtual PC or Virtual Server to run this image. Depending on your hardware, the download files make take between 30-60 minutes to decompress these self-extracting files.

Beta 2 VPC images downloaded before October 29 expired on November 1, 2007, which is earlier than anticipated. The VPC will operate for only 1-2 hours before needing to be restarted. This restart can be eliminated by upgrading the underlying installation of Windows Server on the original VPC image. In addition, new VPC images have been posted below. To transfer Team Foundation Server data to a new VPC, see Moving Team Foundation Server.

  • Visual Studio Team System 2008 Beta 2 Team Suite & Team Foundation Server VPC

IMPORTANT:

  • These downloads are differencing disks. To use them, you must also download Visual Studio Code Name Orcas Base Image contains the OS and is a one-time download for all the Virtual PC images that lay on top of it.

Visual Studio Tools for Applications

Next Generation of Application Customization - Visual Studio Tools for Applications

Microsoft is changing the landscape for application customization with the recent release of Visual Studio Tools for Applications (VSTA) CTP. Microsoft has supported more than 350 independent software vendors (ISVs) and 8 million developers with extensibility through Visual Basic for Applications for the past nine years. VSTA will build on that success by enabling ISVs to integrate and distribute the latest Visual Studio 2005 technology with their applications. And productivity is increased through VSTA’s development environment. VSTA is available as part of the Visual Studio SDK and includes documents, whitepapers, help topics, sample applications, and a redistributable IDE based on Visual Studio 2005. Commercial availability of VSTA is scheduled for later this year and will include licensing options for redistribution. VSTA will also ship with Microsoft Office InfoPath 12, where it will enable Office developers to write managed add-ins for InfoPath in either Visual Basic or C#.
