October 2006 - Letter from the Editor
This letter contains announcement from the Visual FoxPro team about the October CTP of VFP Sedna.
October CTP for Sedna and SP2
We have released the October Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Sedna. This is the third in the series of CTPs we have released. This CTP includes, in addition to the contents of the second CTP, improvements to Reporting, the SQL Server Upsizing Wizard and the Data Explorer. This CTP can be downloaded from the link available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro.
The two new add-ons, the Upsizing Wizard and Data Explorer are improvements over the ones we released with VFP 9.0. A summary of the improvements are included in a readme document that accompanies the download.
The October CTP also contains a patch for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This is the first time the VFP team has released a CTP for a service pack. This service pack contains, in addition to defect fixes, improvements to Reporting. Details are described in the Reporting Enhancements documents in the Sedna Overview downloads.
CTPs are snapshots the project progress that are released for preview by the community. This allows developers to see and experience the work that the team is doing as well as provide feedback in a timely manner. This creates transparency into work in progress, allowing developers to preview that work. It is also an opportunity to provide feedback earlier in the project cycle. Usually a beta is too late to make significant changes.
I would like to encourage you to preview this CTP and use http://connect.microsoft.com to provide feedback to the team. This method allows your feedback to be recorded and tracked directly in our defect tracking database. You can also track status of your issues.
As ever I always welcome feedback via email. Over the last year or so several of you have used both means. This feedback is of immense value and we are very thankful to the community for it.
Conferences
In November Alan Griver will speak at the 13th German Visual FoxPro DevCon in Frankfurt. Later he will be speaking at the Software Developer Event in Ede, The Netherlands, and at Atoutfox in Paris, France. If you are at either of these events please feel free to chat with him. I know Alan is always happy to hear your feedback, comments and suggestions.
