Double-clicking the icon of a DLS instrument in the project tree displays the instrument in the DLS Designer Window, shown in the following figure.

DLS Designer Window

The DLS Designer window consists of the following sections:

  • Instrument Graphical Interface

This area displays all the MIDI pitches on a keyboard, together with layers and regions defined for the instrument. You can use this area to audition sounds and to select, move, and resize regions.

  • Instrument

Settings for patch and instrument bank numbers, and for designating the instrument as a set of drum and percussion sounds. Settings apply to the entire DLS instrument, regardless of how many individual regions or layers you use to design the instrument. See Instrument Settings.

  • Audition Options

Settings for each range that control the response when you click a key in the on-screen keyboard. This helps you to determine how the pitches in the region will sound when various MIDI velocities are used during playback. You can also isolate one layer of region assignments to hear only the waves used in that layer when you click the on-screen keyboard.

  • Region

Settings for the selected region. See Region Settings.

  • Instrument Articulation or Region Articulation

Articulation settings for the DLS instrument. If a the selected region has an Articulations List, the displayed settings apply only to that region, unless Use Instrument Articulation is selected for the region. If the selected region does not have an Articulations List, the displayed settings apply to all regions that do not have their own articulations. See Articulation Settings.
