The Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Web Content Management (WCM) features make it possible to configure, deploy, customize, optimize, and publish sites, site collections, pages, Web Parts, and documents.

Web Content Management in Office SharePoint Server 2007

Office SharePoint Server 2007 is a set of technologies built on top of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. It combines functionality from Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 (MCMS) and Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and adds many new features. The integrated Web content management system in Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides the following:

  • Controlled consistency enabled by a logically organized and constructed system of site collections, sites, site templates, master pages and page layouts, custom fields, Web Parts, and libraries

  • Rich customization features and extensibility through both user interface and the object model

  • Extensive integration with the 2007 Microsoft Office system that includes combining familiar desktop productivity tools and Web content management capability

The content management and collaborative system eliminates the need for the separate solutions offered by Windows SharePoint Services and MCMS. Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides the functionality you need to create dynamic, customized Web sites with one product. Web Content Management functionality of interest specifically to developers includes the following:

  • A page layout model based on Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0, which supports the creation of custom page layouts, master pages, field controls, control templates, and other elements you can use to customize the look and feel of your Web site

  • A customizable page editing toolbar, asset picker, and HTML field control

  • Customizable Web Parts, including the Content Query Web Part that provides the ability to aggregate data from multiple data sources and control how the data is displayed

  • Content deployment functionality built on the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Content Migration API

  • Variations, which support creating and customizing multilanguage sites

Web Content Management Architecture in Office SharePoint Server 2007

Office SharePoint Server 2007 is built as an ASP.NET 2.0 application on top of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 platform. It uses the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 lists infrastructure to store pages, resources, and templates. Publishing features are built on top of services such as Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows Workflow Foundation. The following figure shows the architecture of the Web content management capability in Office SharePoint Server 2007.
