How to: Assign Shortcut Keys

In Microsoft Document Explorer, you can customize the available keyboard shortcuts for menu items, and add a shortcut for a menu command that does not have one by default. Use this feature to set shortcut keys for frequently used commands or to establish your favorite binding for a particular command.

Tip

Enter a key combination in the Press shortcut key(s) textbox to check the key combination for an existing command mapping. For example, Edit.Cut (Ctrl+X (Global)) displays in the Shortcut currently used by list when you enter Ctrl+X in the Press shortcut key(s) textbox.

Add or remove a keyboard shortcut

To add a new keyboard shortcut

  1. On the Tools menu, choose Options.

  2. In the Options dialog box, choose Keyboard.

  3. In the Show commands containing box, type a specific term, such as "edit" or "close" to view a list of menu commands that include that term.

  4. Select a command from the list.

  5. Place your cursor in the Press shortcut keys text box and then, using the keyboard, press the new shortcut key combination.

    Note

Shortcuts can contain the SHIFT, ALT, and/or CTRL keys in combination with letters.

    Note

The following keys cannot be assigned: ESC, PRINT SCRN/SYS RQ, SCROLL LOCK, PAUSE/BREAK, TAB, CAPS LOCK, INSERT, HOME, END, PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, Windows logo keys, Application key, any of the ARROW keys, or ENTER; NUM LOCK, DEL, or CLEAR on the numeric keypad; or CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

If the shortcut is currently used by another menu item, the name of that item is shown in the Shortcut currently used by box. Press BACKSPACE to delete the shortcut key combination and try again.

  6. In the Use new shortcut in drop-down list, select the scope of the shortcut key.

    Note

Global is the default setting. If you choose a specific context, the shortcut key remains in effect only while the context is active. If you choose Global, the shortcut key works in any active window, unless the same shortcut is mapped in another editor, in which case the editor overrides the shortcut.

  7. Click Assign.

    Note

Changes made using the Assign button are not cancelled if you click the Cancel button.

Use the following procedure to remove a keyboard shortcut from your keyboard scheme.

To remove a keyboard shortcut

  1. In the Show commands containing box, type a portion of the command name.

  2. Select the command from the list and choose Remove to delete the corresponding keyboard shortcut.
