Schema Definition Items

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

In the Exchange store, schema information is defined using two types of items:

  • Content class definition items. These define the intent or purpose of an item, along with a set of property names that pertain to content of the item's class. A content class definition also implies a set of semantics requirements for the item. For example, an item having content class "urn:content-classes:mdn" (Mail Delivery Notification (MDN)) is a message, and it has all the same properties defined as does the "urn:content-classes:message" content class. However, the semantics applied to the message are different in that the MDN class denotes a message that is a notification of delivery of some kind.
  • Property definition items. These define information about a property, such as its name and type. To make a custom property visible to schema-aware applications, you create a definition for the property and then refer to it in a content class definition.

You are not required to create schema information for your application. You can simply add properties to an item if you want, and you do not have to define each property for the content class or property definition.
