This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release. To install a sample gateway on an Exchange 2000 Server computer

  1. Open the Exchange System Manager.

  2. Right-click the Connectors group, select New, and then click Exchange 2000 Sample Gateway. The installation dialog box appears.

  3. For the name of the computer executing the installation, use the default Exchange server name.

  4. Select the location that will store the configuration data. If you choose Microsoft® Active Directory®, you must first extend the Active Directory schema. For more information, see Using Active Directory to Store Configuration Information.

  5. Use the default Display Name or enter a new name for the service. The display name can be any valid name for a Microsoft Windows® 2000 service. It will be used as the display name for the service both in Active Directory and in the Exchange System Manager.

  6. Use the default Service Name or enter a new name for the service. The service name can be any valid name for a Windows 2000 service. It will be used in the Relative Distinguished Name (RDN) for the gateway object in Active Directory.

  7. Enter the path to the sample gateway executable file (gwsample.exe).

Caution   Before you click the Apply button, be sure that you have entered the correct path. If you enter the wrong path, the sample gateway will still be installed, but the gateway service will not start. You will then need to remove the sample gateway and reinstall it.

  8. Click the Apply button. When the service finishes installing, click OK to exit.

  9. Close and restart the Exchange System Manager.

You can install one or more Sample Gateways. Unlike Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, Exchange 2000 Server does not restrict the number of sample gateways that you can install. Furthermore, for each gateway that you install, you can choose whether you want to use Active Directory or the Registry to store configuration information.
