Setting Up Your Active Directory Servers

This section applies to a six-computer configuration containing a pair of Web servers using Network Load Balancing (NLB), a pair of SQL Server cluster servers, and a pair of Microsoft Active Directory domain controllers. For more information about the configuration, see Small Site Configuration.

If you decide to implement Active Directory to store user profile or other data, you must complete several steps, which are described in the following topics.

• Before you complete any of these steps, it is important that you understand Active Directory and its role in your site plan. For more information about Active Directory, see Active Directory Overview.

This section contains:

• Creating an Active Directory Domain. Explains how to set up an Active Directory domain controller. Having a separate domain for each site, separate from domains on the corporate network, enhances site security.

• Adding a Domain Controller to an Existing Domain. Explains how to add a domain controller to an existing domain. While this step is not mandatory, it is highly recommended to ensure availability for any user profile data you store in Active Directory.

• Enabling Web Servers to Authenticate Users on Other Servers. Explains how to configure Windows to ensure that users can access all Commerce servers.
