Tutorial Step 5: Localizing the OS Image for the Emulator

Windows CE offers the ability to localize an OS image into several languages. In this step, you localize the custom Enterprise Web Pad OS image into German for the locale of Germany.

To localize the OS image for the Emulator

  1. From the Platform menu in the IDE, choose Settings.

  2. In the Settings For box, verify that EMULATOR-X86 Win32 (WCE emulator)Debug is selected.

  3. Choose the Locale tab.

  4. From the Default Language list, select German (Germany).

  5. To close the Platform Settings dialog box, choose OK.

  6. From the Build menu, choose Build Platform.

It may take as long as twenty minutes to build the OS image. When the build is complete, you see the following message: MYPLATFORM - 0 error(s), XX warning(s).

  7. From the Target menu, choose Download/Initialize.

The KITL Security Warning dialog box appears.

  8. For the purposes of this tutorial, choose Yes.

In approximately one minute, the localized OS image finishes downloading to the Emulator.

  9. From the Windows taskbar, choose MyPlat~1 - Emulator for Windows CE, and then verify that the icons in the displayed OS are labeled in German.

  10. From the Target menu in the IDE, choose Disconnect, and then choose OK.

  11. Verify that you want to stop all running services by choosing OK.

  12. Verify that you want to stop debugging now without disabling KdStub by choosing Yes.

    Control returns to the IDE.

  13. In the window for the Emulator, from the Emulator menu, choose Shut Down.

  14. In the Shut Down dialog box, select Turn off Emulator, and then choose OK to shut down the Emulator.

You have created, built, and downloaded a localized OS image. You are now ready to create and build an application.
