Manual Run-Time Image Updating

You can update a deployed run-time image by copying files and editing registry settings directly on the device.

When you install .msi or other file types, the Windows Installer component must be included in your run-time image. Additionally, adding registry keys on the run-time image requires the Registry Editor component, or at the very least, you must load the registry hive offline from another system. In most cases, updates you make to the run-time image must be done while the image is off-line, because you cannot update system files that are currently in use.

Manually updating a run-time image provides a certain amount of flexibility in the types of updates you make to a device. However, manually updating a run-time image can be time consuming and labor intensive.
