SAPrep

Server Appliance Kit

NAME

SAPrep - Server Appliance Kit 3.0 utility for preparing a server appliance for manufacture

SYNOPSIS

SAPrep [-L|-B]

DESCRIPTION

The SAPrep utility prepares a server running Windows Server 2003 for manufacture as a server appliance. When run without command-line options, SAPrep resets the boot count of the server to zero (0) and resets the initial language so that the next time the computer starts, Windows will respond as though it were starting for the first time.

The changes made by this utility are permanent and cannot be reversed or uninstalled.

Previous versions of SAPrep installed special video, keyboard, and mouse device drivers to allow the server appliance to be remotely administered without these devices. Unlike earlier versions of Windows, however, Windows Server 2003 can run without these devices attached to the computer. For this reason, SAPrep no longer installs these device drivers.

The following describes the options for this command. Consult your redistribution agreement for information about the options you are required to use.

Option Description
-B Changes the branding of the Windows operating system. The startup splash screen, logon dialogs, and other visual elements that display the name of the operating system are changed to display Windows Server 2003 Appliance Edition as the operating-system name.
-L Locks down the server appliance, preventing the following server applications from running:
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • IBM Lotus Notes
  • IBM DB2
  • Oracle database applications

In addition, if this option is used on a computer running Windows Server 2003, the computer cannot be promoted to a domain controller.

Important

  • The SAPrep utility (saprep.exe) must be located on and run from a disk drive on the computer. After running this utility to change the branding, verify that product name has changed on the appropriate screens before continuing. If you run SAPrep to lock down the server, to verify that the operating system is locked down, start Web Interface for Remote Administration, click the Help tab, and then click About Web User Interface for Windows Server Administration. If the lockdown was successful, one of the following lines will be displayed:

    • Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003, Appliance Edition (Build number)SR
    • Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003, Appliance Edition (Build number)ER

The R at the end of the line indicates that the operating system is now restricted.
