Images

For HTML-based applications, you must use image file formats that work in the browser, such as GIF or JPEG.

In choosing a file format, the main considerations are image quality and file size. GIF and JPEG are "lossy" formats: some of the original file information is lost as they are compressed, causing some reduction in image quality. Lossless file formats typically provide higher image quality but tend to be larger.

If download speed is important, use JPEG or GIF images. JPEG images usually work best for photographs, while GIF images work best with graphics that have large, flat areas of color, such as charts, graphs, diagrams, and simple line drawings. When in doubt, try saving copies of an image in both formats, and compare file size and quality.

Remember that graphics must be large enough to view from a distance. Avoid fine detail. Borders and lines should be at least two pixels wide. In the following illustration, the image on the left uses the appropriate detail and pixel width; the illustration on the right does not.

Speakers

Test images on both a computer monitor and a TV screen, viewing them from various distances up to 15 feet from the screen.
