Redirecting Clients

A Windows Media server can redirect clients to alternate URLs and proxy servers.

Permanent Redirection (HTTP Result Code 301)

Permanent redirection is not supported by Windows Media Services.

Temporary Redirection (HTTP Result Code 302)

A cache proxy plug-in can request that the client be redirected to an alternate URL. The downstream client can be another cache proxy server, a distribution server, or a player. The client must perform the redirection. For more information, see URL Redirection.

Proxy Redirection (HTTP Result Code 305)

A cache proxy plug-in can request that the client be redirected to another proxy server. A proxy redirect occurs when the same URL is requested from a different proxy server. The downstream client can be another cache proxy server, distribution server, or player. The client must perform the redirection. It is possible to redirect a client to an alternate proxy server using a different protocol, but the result is not defined. It is therefore recommended that you do not change the protocol from that used in the original request. For more information, see Proxy Redirection.
