Multiple Bit Rate

A Windows Media file can contain multiple streams that originate from the same source but are encoded at different bit rates so that the client can determine the most appropriate stream to use based on the available bandwidth. A file that supports this is called a multiple bit rate (MBR) file, and the Windows Media Format supports MBR for both audio and video streams.
