Team Foundation Server Upgrade Types

You can upgrade from one edition of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server to another. For example, you can upgrade from a trial edition to a full edition. Before you purchase the edition to which you want to upgrade, you should make sure not only that the edition is appropriate for your business needs but also that the upgrade path is supported.

Team Foundation Server Upgrades

You can obtain several editions of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server:

  • Team Foundation Server Trial Edition   This edition is available as a free download from the Microsoft Web site. This edition has all the functionality of the full edition but will expire after 90 days.

  • Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition   This edition has all the functionality of the full edition but is limited to five users.

  • Team Foundation Server   This edition is the full edition of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server.

Supported Upgrade Paths

You can upgrade Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server in the following ways:

  • From a prerelease version to the released version

  • From the trial edition to the workgroup edition

  • From the trial edition to the full edition

  • From the workgroup edition to the full edition

You can also upgrade from Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server or a pre-release version of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server to the full, released version of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server. Before you perform this type of upgrade, you must make sure that your deployment does not use fully qualified domain names (FQDNs), or the upgrade will fail. Before you upgrade a deployment that is configured with FQDNs, you must first reconfigure it to use either computer names or IP addresses. For more information, download the most recent version of the installation guide for Team Foundation from the Microsoft Web site.

Note

You cannot upgrade from a pre-release version of Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server to any version of Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server. You must upgrade your pre-release version of Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server to the released version before you can upgrade to Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server.

Upgrading SQL Server Evaluation Edition When Upgrading From Team Foundation Server Trial Edition

In addition to upgrading your edition of Team Foundation Server, you might have to upgrade your edition of SQL Server. If you installed Team Foundation Server Trial Edition, you must upgrade your SQL Server software from SQL Server Evaluation Edition to either SQL Server Standard Edition or SQL Server Enterprise Edition as part of the upgrade process. Remember to do this before the trial period expires.

Product Key Considerations

During the upgrade of Team Foundation Server, you will have to provide a product key. If you acquired Team Foundation Server through a volume licensing program, the key is embedded in the installation medium and can be difficult to find.
