Workgroup Requirements for Team Foundation Server

A workgroup deployment is intended for smaller teams or departments that are using workgroups instead of domains to reduce their administrative costs. A workgroup deployment might also be considered for pilot projects or evaluations in order to avoid involving a central IT organization and the must configure Active Directory.

In a workgroup deployment, Team Foundation Server must be deployed on a single server that uses a 32-bit operating system. The dual-server configuration is not supported. Additionally, all Team Foundation Server users must be created as local accounts on the server that is running Team Foundation Server.

Client computers may be part of different workgroups than Team Foundation Server. Client computers can be members of an Active Directory domain even when Team Foundation Server is in a workgroup, and Team Foundation Server can be a member of an Active Directory domain and still support clients that are members of workgroups. However, in these cases, clients must log on and provide their local Team Foundation Server account credentials.

The following workgroup configurations are supported for Team Foundation Server:

  • Team Foundation Server and Team Foundation clients in the same workgroup.

  • Team Foundation Server in an Active Directory domain and Team Foundation clients in a workgroup.

  • Team Foundation Server in a workgroup and Team Foundation clients in a domain.

For specific information about workgroup configurations, see Managing Team Foundation Server in a Workgroup.
