How to: Create a Server-Level Group

Creating a server-level security group is an efficient way to grant a specific set of permissions to a group of people for Team Foundation Server. If you want to create a security group for your team project, see How to: Create a Team Project Group. Make sure that you allow only the minimum permissions necessary for the group, and add only those users or groups who must belong to this new global group. If this group requires a high level of permissions but is project-specific, consider creating a team project group instead.

Required Permissions

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Team Foundation Administrators group. For more information about permissions, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.

To create a server-level group

  1. In Team Explorer, select the Team Foundation Server for which you want to create a server-level group.

  2. On the Team menu, point to Team Foundation Server Settings, and then click Group Membership.

  3. In the Global Groups dialog box, click New.

  4. In the Create New Team Foundation Server Group dialog box, in the Group Name box, type the name for the team project group.

  5. In the Description box, type a description for the group.

  6. Click OK.

Important

After you have created a server-level group, you must add the newly created group to Team Foundation Server in the Security dialog box, give the group the appropriate permissions, and then add members to the group. By default, a new group is created without any permissions.
