How to: Combine External Applications with Referencing Applications in Application Systems

In System Designer, you can include or exclude external applications with their referencing applications in a single system. However, you can also combine these two approaches.

Note

Certain considerations apply depending on the approach you use. For more information, see External Applications in Application Systems.

You can create a system that contains the referencing applications and proxy endpoints for those applications. You can then include this system inside another system that contains the external applications. You can also use an existing system to create such a system.

To create a new system that exposes proxy endpoints and nests within another system

  1. Create a system diagram that includes the referencing applications but not the external applications.

  2. Add proxy endpoints to the consumer endpoints on the referencing applications.

  3. Create another system diagram containing the referenced external applications.

  4. On the system diagram with the referenced external applications, add the system containing the referencing applications from the System View window.

  5. On the system diagram with the referenced applications, connect the proxy endpoints on the inner system to the provider endpoints on the referenced external applications.

For more information about these tasks, see the following topics:

To create a system that nests within another system from an existing system

  1. Create two new system diagrams.

  2. From the existing system, copy the referencing applications to one of the new systems.

  3. From the existing system, copy the referenced applications to the other new system.

  4. On the system diagram with the referencing applications, create proxy endpoints for the consumer endpoints on those applications.

  5. On the system diagram with the referenced applications, add the system with the proxy endpoints from the System View window.

  6. On the system diagram with the referenced applications, connect the proxy endpoints on the inner system to the provider endpoints on the referenced applications.

If you perform this task by copying the existing system diagram (.sd) file, and the original system diagram remains in the solution, you must temporarily change the SDM document name on the original diagram by using the Document Name property under the SDM Document Identity section in the Properties window.

Tip

The Document Name property is associated with the system diagram and not the .sd file itself. You can select the diagram surface by clicking it.

You must change this property on the original before you can add its copy to the solution. After adding the copy, you should then open it and rename its system and the SDM document name. After performing this step, you can then change the SDM document name on the original back to its previous name.
