How to: Connect by Using Bluetooth

The following procedures describe how to connect a device to your development computer by using Bluetooth and either ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center. To complete the process, you must have the following:

• Windows Mobile Device Center 6.0 or later (for Windows Vista) or ActiveSync 4.0 or later installed on the desktop computer.

• Bluetooth antennas and drivers on both the development computer and the device.

  Note

  The procedures that are described in this topic might vary depending on your hardware because different manufacturers have different Bluetooth user interfaces.

To connect the device to the development computer by using Bluetooth

1. In the Bluetooth properties dialog box on the development computer, change the discoverability to ON.

2. On the device, turn on the Bluetooth antenna by performing one of the following steps.

   • For devices that run Windows Mobile Smartphone or Standard, click Start, click Settings, click Connections, click Bluetooth, and then click Bluetooth again. On the menu, click Turn On Bluetooth.

   • For devices that run Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Professional, go to Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Bluetooth. On the Mode tab, select Turn On Bluetooth.

3. Connect the device to the desktop computer by performing one of the following steps.

   • For devices that run Windows Mobile Smartphone or Standard, select Addnewdevice.

   • For devices that run Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Professional, on the Devices tab, tap NewPartnership.

   1. The device performs a search and displays a list of nearby Bluetooth-enabled computers.

4. Select the development computer that you want to connect to by using ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center.

5. When prompted, type a temporary passkey, and then quickly type the same passkey on the development computer.

   You now have a Bluetooth connection to your device. To set up ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center, perform the steps that follow.

To set up ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center

1. On the development computer, go into the Bluetooth configuration and add an incoming COM port for your Bluetooth connection.

   Note

   This step is not required if your version of ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center connects to Bluetooth devices directly.

   This creates a virtual COM port for this Bluetooth connection.

2. In ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center, open the Connection Settings dialog box, and then select Allow connections to one of the following.

3. Select Bluetooth and then click OK. If Bluetooth is not available, select the COM port of the Bluetooth device, and then click OK.

   Note

   The Bluetooth option is not available in all versions of ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center.

4. On the device, start ActiveSync.

5. On the ActiveSync menu, click Connect via Bluetooth.

   You should now have an ActiveSync connection.
