How to: Make a Work Item Obsolete

If you accidentally create a work item, or your team no longer needs a work item, you can make the work item obsolete. Obsolete work items still exist in the work item database, but only appear in the results list for queries that specifically search for closed or obsolete work items.

Note

This topic is based on the work item fields available in the bug work item for MSF for Agile Software Development. If your project is using a different methodology, your work item fields may be different. MSF for Agile Software Development is one of the process guidance templates that are included with Team Foundation. For more information, see Finding and Using Process Guidance.

Required Permissions

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Contributors group or have the View work items in this node, and Edit work items in this node permissions set to Allow. For more information, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.

To make a work item obsolete

  1. In the State field, choose Closed.

  2. In the Reason field, choose Obsolete.

  3. (Optional) In the History field, explain why the work item is obsolete.
