How to: Set Up a Journal File to Audit User Activity

To monitor the actions of database users, you might want to create a journal file. This is a text file that records any action by a user that generates a history entry for a file or project in the Visual SourceSafe database. You can set up a journal file from Visual SourceSafe Administrator or by using the Journal_File initialization variable in the Srcsafe.ini file.

Monitoring security-related events can help you detect attempts to compromise the data in a Visual SourceSafe database. For more information about auditing security events and auditing access to objects such as files and directories, see the Windows Help.

To create a journal file in Visual SourceSafe Administrator:

  1. In Visual SourceSafe Administrator, on the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. In the SourceSafe Options dialog box, click the General tab.

  3. Select the journal file to use. Secure the journal file by placing it in the same directory as the Srcsafe.ini file.

  4. Grant your database users Modify sharing permissions for the journal file. See How to: Set Share Permissions for a Database.
