The Designer Integration Service (DIS) is a service added to Visual Studio; its goal is to support referencing of model elements across DSL Tools designers. The service is implemented as a VSIP package and is distributed as a DIS Powertoy that is available on the Domain-Specific Language Tools page of the Visual Studio Developer Center on MSDN. You do not have to download and install the DIS, because the Web Service Software Factory Modeling Edition comes with a version of the DIS assemblies, and the Web Service Software Factory installer installs the DIS package.

For a good overview of the integration of DSLs with GAT packages, including the model-to-model integration, see Guidance Automation Toolkit and Domain-Specific Language Tools for Visual Studio 2005: Integration Scenarios in the MSDN Architecture Center. Note that the information in the article applies to a previous version of GAT that was targeted to Visual Studio 2005.
