Create a Linked Work Item

You can create a work item that is automatically linked to an existing work item. You can do this from the results list of a work item query or from the links tab of an open work item.

To create a work item that is linked to an existing one using Team Web Access

  1. In Team Web Access, perform one of the following actions:

    • View the results of a work item query, click the arrow next to the work item to which you want to link the new work item, and then click Add New Linked Work Item.

    • Open the work item to which you want to link a new work item, click the Links tab, and then click Add New Linked Work Item.

    The New Linked Work Item dialog box appears.

  2. In the Link type list, click the type of link that you want to create.

  3. In the Work item type list, click the type of work item that you want to create.

  4. Type a Title and other information as appropriate, and then click OK.

    A new work item form appears.

  5. Add information to the work item as appropriate.

  6. Click Save & Close.

To create a work item that is linked to an existing one using Team Explorer

  1. In Team Explorer, perform one of the following actions:

    • View the results of a work item query, right-click the work item to which you want to link a new work item, and then click Add New Linked Work Item.

    • Open the work item to which you want to link a new work item, click the Links tab, and then click Add New Linked Work Item.

    The New Linked Work Item dialog box appears.

  2. In the Link Type list, click the type of link that you want to create.

    For example, to make the new work item a child of the current work item, click Child.

    The Link Preview Visualization shows the relationship between the current and new work items.

  3. In the Work Item Type list, click the type of work item that you want to create.

  4. Type a Title and other information as appropriate.

  5. Click OK.

    A new work item form appears.

  6. Add information to the work item as appropriate.

  7. Click Save Work Item.
