Changes in Windows Server 2008

Beginning with the Windows Server 2008 (Beta 2) operating system, certain features that were previously supported by Windows Media Services are no longer supported. The following list describes the features that have been removed or reduced in functionality.

  • The Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol is not supported.
  • Windows Media Services does not provide an MMS Server Control Protocol plug-in.
  • Note   Even though the MMS protocol is not supported, the mms:// prefix for URLs is still supported. We strongly recommend that you have clients connect to your server by using a URL with an mms:// prefix. That will ensure that Windows Media Player applies protocol rollover as needed, and may also reduce startup latency.
