Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) enables devices to use the flexibility of Web-based open standards for security-enhanced Web service messaging, discovery, description and eventing. DPWS describes a set of requirements that allows a device host to expose its available services and enables client applications to easily discover it on the subnet and manage it across the network. These DPWS mechanisms depend on a lightweight subset of the following communication standards and protocols:

  • XML
  • Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)
  • HTTP, and UDP for discovery
  • TCP/IP IPv4 and IPv6
  • HTTPD Web Server
  • Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP)
  • Web Service Description Language (WSDL)
  • MIME attachments using MTOM for in-band streaming
  • WS-Discovery
  • WS-MetadataTransfer
  • WS-Addressing
  • WS-Eventing
  • TLS/SSL to enable authentication and to protect message data for secure channel communication
