Navigating Icons in a Windows Classic Home Screen Plug-in

Individual icons in the Windows Classic Home screen plug-in are hardware navigable.

Note

This section applies to the Windows Classic Home Screen Overview and not the new Windows Default Home Screen Overview.

You can navigate the icons by using the D-pad, keyboard, or stylus. Upon receiving focus, the left-most icon will be highlighted.

Navigating Icons by using the D-pad

The following table shows the keys to use to navigate Icons by using the D-pad.

Key Action

Left

Move focus to the icon on the left. If the current icon is already the left-most, release focus to the previous plug-in.

Right

Move focus to the icon on the right. If the current icon is already the right-most, release focus to the next plug-in.

Down

Release focus to the next plug-in.

Up

Release focus to the previous plug-in.

Action

Action will be the same as tapping the icon on the screen. This can be simulated by sending a tap message (located to the center of the icon) to the application hosting the icon.

Do nothing.

Navigating Icons by using the Keyboard

The following table shows the keys to use to navigate Icons by using the keyboard.

Key Action

Left

Same as D-pad.

Right

Same as D-pad.

Down

Same as D-pad.

Up

Same as D-pad.

Enter

Same as D-pad.

[Other]

Do nothing.

User will act on an individual icon by just tapping on it.

Exceptions

  • If the user rotates the device while an icon is selected, the selection is dismissed.
  • If an icon is selected and the process that owns the icon removes it from the Home screen, the selection is dismissed.
