Sample Queries

The Sample Queries application provides many examples of query operations for LINQ to Objects, LINQ to SQL, LINQ to XML and LINQ to DataSet. The application shows you a tree view of the available samples. This enables you to choose both the general area and particular example you want to examine. The user interface displays the source code for each query you choose, together with the runtime results of the query execution.

To get samples and instructions for installing them

  • Do one or more of the following:

    • On the Help menu, click Samples.

The Readme displays information about samples.

    • Visit the Visual Studio 2008 Samples Web site. The most recent versions of samples are available there.

    • Locate samples on the computer on which Visual Studio is installed. By default, samples and a Readme file are installed in drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Samples\lcid. For Express editions of Visual Studio, all samples are located online.

For more information, see Visual Studio Samples.

Demonstrates

The Sample Queries project contains about 101 samples from each of these areas:

  • LINQ to Objects

  • LINQ to SQL

  • LINQ to DataSet

  • LINQ to XML

Run the project, and select the type of LINQ sample that you want to explore. Examine the options, and run each query that interests you. The output from the query and the source code will be displayed in the interface of the application.

See the Connectivity note in the root directory for the samples project if you are have trouble running the database samples.

Note

Many LINQ samples require XML files and/or the version of the Northwind sample database that is located in the Data sample. If you install the Data Sample in the same parent folder as the other LINQ samples, the path for the XML files and database file will be resolved automatically. Many sample files also require the Object Dumper Sample project.
