Microsoft Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform implementation of the .NET Framework for building and delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web and devices. This section provides information for developing with Silverlight version 1.0, which uses the XAML markup language and JavaScript to create applications.
Note Silverlight version 1.1 (currently available as an Alpha version) lets you use languages besides JavaScript, including .NET Framework languages such as C# and Visual Basic. For more information about the difference between Silverlight 1.0 and 1.1, see Silverlight Overview (Silverlight.net). For more information about Silverlight 1.1, see the Silverlight 1.1 Alpha - Development with the .NET Framework section of this documentation.
