How to: Authenticate with Windows Live ID

Microsoft Office Live Small Business provides server-side authentication by using Microsoft Windows Live ID services (formerly called Microsoft Passport). Different classes of users can be given different permissions and rights. Users create sign in credentials once, then they can use the same credentials with other sites and services, including Windows Live Messenger, Microsoft MSN Hotmail, and MSN Music.

If you create a Web page in using Office Live Small Business, it already has Windows Live ID authentication. You can use any client-side script on the page to interact with Office Live Small Business APIs. If you want to work with the Office Live Small Business APIs from other applications, users must first be authenticated through Windows Live ID.

The Office Live Small Business Solution Developer team created a code sample showing how to authenticate client-side applications using Windows Live ID. For more information, see How to: Use the Client Application Connection Sample.
