About Customizing with SharePoint Designer 2007

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 is a new product for creating and customizing Web sites built with Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and for building workflow-enabled applications based on SharePoint technologies. SharePoint Designer 2007 provides professional tools for customizing interactive solutions for Microsoft Office Live Small Business.

Some Office Live Small Business capabilities are available only by using Office SharePoint Designer  2007. For example, you must use Office SharePoint Designer 2007 to configure a workflow or to set up the Data View Web Part to display external data on a dashboard.

With Office SharePoint Designer 2007 you can do the following:

  • Add Web Parts to dashboards or other Web Part pages
  • Create views
  • Add, edit, and delete Web pages and other Office Live Small Business file types
  • Lay out tables and cells
  • Create and modify workflows

It is not possible to use Office SharePoint Designer 2007 for the following tasks:

  • Edit an Office Live Small Business public Web site
  • Create applications, lists, document libraries, or workspaces
  • Customize Business Contact Manager items (because Business Contact Manager lists are designed from custom Windows SharePoint Services forms, the view in Office SharePoint Designer  2007 is a generic view rather than the custom view)

In addition, you should be aware of the consequences if you make the following code changes using Office SharePoint Designer  2007:

  • Do not add any server-side code, because server-side code cannot be interpreted when the page opens on an Office Live Small Business site.
  • You can use client-side scripting with Office Live Small Business applications. However, when these applications run in the HTTPS protocol instead of HTTP, users receive two warnings before the item is displayed.
