About Microsoft XPS Document Writer

The Microsoft XPS Document Writer (MXDW) is a print-to-file driver that enables any Windows XP SP2/2003/Vista application to create XML Paper Specification (XPS) Document files. For more information on XPS, see XML Paper Specification (XPS) Document, XPS and Windows Vista, and XPS Specification and License Downloads.

Installation

Windows XP SP2/2003: Download and install either .Net Framework 3.0 or the XPS Essential Pack from Microsoft.

Windows Vista: MXDW is installed automatically when the operating system is installed.

How to Use

When installed, this print driver appears as an available print queue through the Print command in an application. When MXDW is used as the "printer," the driver will prompt the user for an output file name and create an XPS Document that captures the print output of the application.

The image below shows MXDW being selected as the "printer" in the Windows Vista common print dialog.

Selecting MXDW in Windows Vista

Applications developers can customize the output of MXDW using the MXDW configuration settings.
