A combo card as a Secure Digital I/O (SDIO) card that implements one or more I/O functions and contains an SD memory function. The SD memory function does not appear to the OS as an SDIO function but as a virtual card that resides in the same card package as the SDIO function. This allows a combo device that combines SD memory and an I/O function to operate under various conditions.
If a combo card is inserted into an SDIO-aware host, the host can utilize both the SD memory and SDIO functions. If a card is inserted into an SD Memory-only host, or into a host that does not support the specific I/O function, the end user can still utilize the SD memory portion while the I/O function remains inactive.
The bus driver detects the presence of an SD memory function and creates an additional device instance in order to load the client driver. The client driver is unaware that it is operating on a combo card.
