Understanding the RAS connection sequence helps you understand PPP. The connection sequence is as follows:

  1. PPP operations begin upon connecting to a remote access server.
  2. Framing rules are established between the client and server, which enables frame transfer to occur.
  3. The remote access server authenticates the client using the PPP authentication protocols in serial-link communications: Password Authentication Protocol (PAP), Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP), and Microsoft CHAP. The protocols invoked depend on the security configurations of the client and server.
  4. When the client is authenticated, Network Control Protocol (NCP) is used to enable and configure the server for the LAN protocol used for the client.

When the PPP connection sequence has successfully completed, the client and server can begin to transfer data using IP.
