Migrating from WMI Providers

Topic Last Modified: 2007-11-11

The Exchange Server 2003 providers for Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) are used to create applications that monitor and manage Exchange servers, databases, public folders, user mailboxes, and mail flow queues.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 does not include WMI providers. You cannot use applications that use the Exchange 2003 WMI providers to monitor computers that are running Exchange 2007.

Microsoft Windows PowerShell commands that work with Exchange replace the WMI providers in Exchange 2007. It is easy to migrate applications that use the WMI providers to Windows PowerShell commands. The Windows PowerShell commands that are used to control Exchange 2007 servers, storage groups, databases, and users are simpler to use than the corresponding WMI providers and objects.
