Configuring the SNMP Service

For MOM to generate SNMP traps, the computer generating the trap must have the SNMP service installed and running. Additionally, to process the SNMP traps, your network must have a valid SNMP trap destination (an SNMP manager application).

An SNMP trap generated by MOM is the result of an alert rule or event rule. During creation of the rule, an administrator must decide whether the SNMP trap is generated on the server running MOM or on the agent computer. Generating the SNMP trap on the agent computers requires configuring the SNMP service on a larger number of computers.

Whether you are using a server running MOM or an agent computer, any system that raises SNMP traps must have the SNMP service installed. The SNMP settings must also specify an SNMP trap destination and community name.

To install the SNMP service on a Microsoft Windows 2000 agent or a server running MOM

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  3. Select the Management and Monitoring Tools check box, and then click Details.

  4. Select the Simple Network Management Protocol check box, and then click OK.

  5. Click Next to proceed with the Windows Components Wizard.

  6. If prompted, specify the location of the installation disk directory, and then click OK.

  7. Specify the community name by clicking the Traps property page.

  8. Enter a community name, such as public, and then click Add to list. Any community name can be used, but MOM will use the first name that appears in the Community Name box.

  9. Specify the SNMP trap destination by clicking Add, entering the host computer name, IP address, or Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) address for the SNMP trap destination, and then clicking OK.

If SNMP is already installed on the computer, you can configure the community name and SNMP trap destination by opening the property page for the SNMP service (using the Services MMC console) and clicking the Traps property page. Follow the previous steps for configuring the community name and SNMP trap destination. Also, use the Services MMC console to start the SNMP service automatically anytime the computer is restarted. To start the Services MMC console, run Services.msc, or right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then navigate to Services in the left pane.
