The Digital Video Recorder Engine allows you more flexibility in how you choose to store and view media. In addition to traditional live media playback, you now have the option to store media and view it at a later date as many times as you wish. You also have control over playback speed and playback direction.

In order to provide these additional features, the media must be buffered in memory and stored persistently. This buffering and persistent storage is provided by the Digital Video Recorder engine.

DVR scenarios and processes:

The Digital Video Recorder Engine enables a user to do the following:

  • Create a recording
  • Play a recording
  • Play live television
  • Play live or recorded television when a recording is in progress
  • Pause and resume playback
  • Rewind and fast-forward a recording
  • Seek to a location in a recording
  • Convert a temporary to a permanent recording
  • Transition from permanent recording to a temporary recording.

The DVR engine is intended to enable these scenarios.
