The Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 enables OEMs and Operators to provide a direct push solution to Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices. The Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) works with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2.

MSFP is a software upgrade that provides a mobile messaging solution that uses the management benefits of Exchange ActiveSync, which is a part of Exchange Server 2003, and new security policies on the Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices. Exchange Active Sync is an Exchange synchronization protocol that is designed for keeping the Exchange mailbox synchronized with a Windows Mobile 5.0-based device.

MSFP helps Enterprise administrators to better manage devices, and helps businesses improve mobile device security. It also allows the mobile information workers to stay connected to their Microsoft Outlook e-mail, corporate contacts, calendar, and task information.

The following table shows how MSFP benefits businesses.

Benefit Feature and Description
Enhanced Outlook Mobile experience Direct push technology

For more information about these features, see Enhanced Outlook Mobile Experience with MSFP.

Keeps users Outlook Mobile up-to-date with immediate delivery of data from the Exchange mailbox to their device. This includes e-mail, calendar, contact, and task information. Outlook Mobile task synchronization Adds Outlook Mobile task list synchronization to items that can be synchronized with Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2. Global Address List lookup Enables over-the-air lookup and browsing of the Global Address List stored on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
Device Protection New Security policies enable the Exchange server to protect Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices that are directly synchronized with the server.
Remote policy enforcement
Helps IT staff remotely manage and enforce corporate IT policies over the air using the Exchange System Manager; for example, requiring a PIN password for every device.
Remote device wipe
Helps protect device data in the event a device is lost, stolen, or otherwise compromised. Operators or system administrators can remotely remove device data by using the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Mobile Administration Web tool.

Password enforcement

Helps prevent unauthorized access to a device by automatically removing device data when the password is entered incorrectly a specified number of times.

Certificate-based authentication

Increases security for accessing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 and eliminates the need to store corporate log-in credentials on the device.

Native S/MIME support

Helps protect e-mail content with native support of Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (S/MIME) for signing and encrypting messages with digital certificates.

For more information, see Device Protection with MSFP.

Cost-effective mobile messaging solution MSFP helps keep mobile messaging costs low because it allows the use of existing Exchange Server 2003 SP2 investments, which reduces the need for additional third party server product and client access license fees.
Messaging support
Enables companies to use their existing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 investment; eliminates the need for additional non-Exchange third-party server products and client access license fees.
GZIP data compression
Reduces Mobile Operator network use by compressing data, thereby optimizing data bandwidth.

Requirements

The following lists shows the MSFP requirements:

  • Upgrade from Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange Server 2003 SP2.
  • Direct synchronization with the Exchange Server. PC synchronization is needed only for Certificate-based Authentication, which requires a one-time connection to ActiveSync for certificate deployment and periodic connection at certificate renewal time.
  • Users having some type of data connection (GPRS or desktop pass-through using ActiveSync 4.1) in order to use the GAL functionality.
