How to Configure a File Server (Windows CE 5.0)

Windows CE includes the File Server Catalog item. You can create a Windows CE-based device that functions as a networked file server and enables clients to store and retrieve files, and makes use of the Internet for communication between client devices, network printers, scanners, and other shared equipment.

Setting up a file server requires special security considerations. This document shows how to use the registry to optimize security when you configure your file server. This document also shows how to connect a client computer to the file server and configure the file server by using the file server user interface (UI) sample included with Windows CE.

Hardware and Software Requirements

This document makes the following assumptions:

  • Your Platform Builder installation includes CEPC x86 and Emulator x86 board support packages.
  • You have a CEPC already configured. For more information, see How to Set Up a CEPC
  • Your computers are connected to an existing network through a hub.

The following table shows the devices that are required for your File Server network.

Device Software Configured as
Development workstation and client computer. Windows 2000 Professional Edition or later with Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder installed. Development workstation for CEPC and Ffle server client.
Windows CE-based device functioning as a file server. Windows CE 5.0 or later. A gateway. See Creating an OS Design for a File Server Device for a list of required components.

Additional Hardware Requirements

The following table shows the additional hardware you will need to use the file server.

  • From the Build OS menu, ensure that the following are selected:

    Clean Before Building

    Copy Files to Release Directory after Build

  • From the Build OS menu, choose Build and Sysgen.

5. Configure a connection for downloading your run-time image to the CEPC.
  • In the Target Connectivity Options dialog box, choose Ethernet from the Download and Transport drop-down list and None from the Debugger drop-down list.
