How to: Create a Visual SourceSafe Project

This topic provides procedures for creating Visual SourceSafe projects. For project basics, see Files and Projects in Visual SourceSafe. Project design criteria are provided in Designing Projects for Your Team.

Creating a Basic Project

To add a new Visual SourceSafe project:

  1. Open Visual SourceSafe Explorer.

  2. On the File menu, click Create Project. Alternatively, you can use the INSERT key in the projects pane.

  3. In the Create Project in <name> dialog box, type the project name in the Project box.

  4. In the Comment box, you can optionally enter a brief description of the project.

  5. Click OK to create a single empty project.

Creating Subprojects

Visual SourceSafe allows you to create subprojects in several ways. In addition to creating a subproject as a regular project, you can:

  • Add an existing folder to your parent project

  • Use Windows drag and drop techniques to add a subproject to the parent project

To add an existing folder as a subproject:

  1. In Visual SourceSafe Explorer, select the Visual SourceSafe project to which to add the subproject.

  2. On the File menu, click Add Files.

  3. In the Add File to <name> dialog box, select a folder from the Folders list.

  4. Click Add.

  5. In the Add File dialog box, use the Comment for box to enter an optional comment for the folder you are adding.

  6. Click OK.

To create a subproject using drag and drop:

  1. Open Visual SourceSafe Explorer, and resize it so you have enough room to display Windows Explorer.

  2. Open Windows Explorer, and resize it as needed.

  3. Select a folder in Windows Explorer.

  4. Drag the selected folder onto a Visual SourceSafe project in Visual SourceSafe Explorer. The folder is added as a subproject.
