Hardware and Software Requirements for the Job Submission Sample

This topic describes the hardware and software required to install and use the Excel Services and Excel 2007 Windows CCS Job Submission sample. It discusses the requirements for the head node, compute node, and client computer.

Head Node and Compute Node Requirements

The head node and compute node require the following software:

  • Windows Compute Cluster Server (CCS) 2003 to be installed on Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 edition

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

    Note

Before you install Office SharePoint Server 2007, install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 and enable ASP.NET 2.0.

The following table describes the hardware requirements for the head node and compute node.

Area Requirements

CPU requirements

64-bit architecture computer Intel Pentium, or Xeon family with Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) processor architecture.

Or AMD Opteron family, AMD Athlon family, or compatible processors.

Processor speed of 2.5 gigahertz (GHz) or higher; dual processor, 3 GHz or higher recommended.

Minimum RAM

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM; 2 GB RAM recommended.

Farm deployment requires 2 GB RAM; more than 2 GB RAM recommended.

Maximum RAM

32 GB.

Multiprocessor support

Windows CSS 2003 and Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition to support up to four processors per server.

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition to support up to eight processors per server.

BIOS

Latest server BIOS offered by the specific hardware manufacturer.

Minimum Disk Space for Setup

7 GB; 4 GB for Windows CCS 2003.

3 GB for Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Drive

DVD drive, locally accessible or network accessible.

Disk volumes

Head node: Windows CCS 2003 installation process requires a minimum of two volumes: one for the system partition, and one for Remote Installation Services.

Compute nodes: One volume per node.

NTFS file system required.

RAID 0,1,5 can be used as appropriate, although these are not required.

Network interface card

All nodes require at least one NIC. If a private network is planned, the head node requires a minimum of two NICs to create a public and private network, depending on the network topology selected.

Each node can require more NICs for public network access or in support of an MPI-based network.

Network

56 Kbps or faster connection between client computers and server.

For connections between computers in the cluster, 100 megabits per second (Mbps) connection required; 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) connection or MPI-based network recommended.

Other

Internet Simple Mail Transfer Protocol/Post Office Protocol 3 (SMTP/POP3), Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4), or MAPI-compliant messaging software required for e-mail notifications. Farm deployment requires SQL Server 2000 SP3a. SQL 2005 SP1 and SQL 2005 Analysis Services SP1 required for some advanced features.

Web Browser

Although administrative tasks on SharePoint sites are optimized for Level 1 Web browsers, Office SharePoint Server 2007 also provides rendering support for other Web browsers that are commonly used. To ensure that you have complete access to all the functionality, we recommend that you use a Level 1 Web browser for administrative tasks.

Level 1 Web browsers take advantage of advanced features provided by ActiveX controls and provide the most complete user experience. Level 1 Web browsers offer full functionality on all SharePoint sites, including the Central Administration Web site.

Level 1 Web browsers:

  • Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista systems: Internet Explorer 6.0 or 7.0

Level 2 Web browsers:

  • Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista client systems: Firefox 1.5; Mozilla 1.7; Netscape 8.1; Unix/Linux systems: Firefox 1.5; Netscape 7.2

  • Mac OS/X systems: Firefox 1.5; Safari 2.0

    Note

Level 2 Web browsers provide basic functionality so that users can both read and write in SharePoint sites and perform site administration. However, because ActiveX controls are supported only in Level 1 Web browsers, and because functionality can differ within browsers, Level 2 Web browsers might provide a different or varied user experience from Level 1 Web browsers.

Web browsers not listed in either Level 1 or Level 2 are not supported. For example, older Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 5.01, Internet Explorer 5.5x, Internet Explorer for Macintosh, and versions of third-party Web browsers that are earlier than the ones listed as Level 2 Web browsers are not supported.

Supported Operating Systems for Head Node and Compute Node

You must install the Windows 2003 Compute Cluster Pack on one of the following supported operating systems, which are supported for both the head node and compute node:

  • Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition

  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition

The remote administration and job scheduling components are automatically installed on the head node of the compute cluster, but can also be installed on a remote workstation to simplify administration and scheduling.

The supported operating systems for installation of the remote components are as follows:

  • Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or R2

  • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

  • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

In addition, Windows CCS 2003 requires the following software:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

  • Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 Pre-Release to run the Compute Cluster Administrator snap-in

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) to store all job information

Windows Components

The head node must be configured as a Web server by enabling Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0, including:

  • Common files.

  • World Wide Web publishing services.

  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) services. To enable e-mail alerts and notifications, incoming and outgoing e-mail settings must be configured by specifying an SMTP e-mail server.

The head node must be configured to use IIS 6.0 worker process isolation mode. This is the default setting in new installations.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

Before you install Office SharePoint Server 2007, you must install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 and enable ASP.NET 2.0.

Minimum System Requirements for the Job Submission Add-In

System device Requirements

Computer and processor

500 megahertz (MHz) processor or higher.

Memory

256 megabyte (MB) RAM or higher.

Hard disk

1.5 GB; a portion of this disk space is freed after installation if the original download package is removed from the hard disk.

Drive

CD-ROM or DVD drive.

Display

1024x768 or higher resolution monitor.
