Matthew Bishop

Senior Director, Microsoft Ltd

Matthew was appointed Senior Director of the Developer Platform Evangelism (DPE) team in July 2005.

Prior to this role, Matthew was Senior Director of Government (EMEA regions) where he was responsible for business growth and relationships with Governments across the region. Before this, Matthew was Director of Government Sales & Solutions (EMEA regions) where he increased business in local and regional Government and created a successful European Government Leaders Forum.

He first joined Microsoft in December 1998 to become a Strategy Consultant, working with Enterprise customers and partners. In 2000, Matthew became Government Services Practice Manager which included working on the Government Gateway and New Tax Credits projects. Matthew then became Director of Customer Experience within the Services team.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Matthew was a civil servant in the UK Government Cabinet Office, where his team advised ministers on e-government goals for electronic service delivery and produced the first e-government Green Paper in Europe.

Matthew enjoys spending his spare time with his young family and travelling.


Tim Brassey

Partner Strategy Consultant, Microsoft Ltd

After eleven years in a variety of technical roles at Hewlett Packard, Tim joined Microsoft UK eight years ago as an Enterprise Strategy Consultant at Glaxo Wellcome. He then moved over to the partner group where he was the Partner Strategy Consultant for Computacenter. For the last five years he has been the PSC for Capgemini working on a variety of bids and projects. A small part of that role has included grappling with some obscure licensing scenarios!


Steve Brough

Lead Solution Architect, Fujitsu Services

Steve Brough has worked in the IT industry for 22 years covering a range of disciplines. He has worked for the past nine years in Fujitsu Services and during his career has provided IT consultancy in a broad range of companies covering many vertical markets.

He has particular strengths in the Microsoft arena; he has an electronics qualification gained on PC systems, worked for many years as an application developer on mainframe and PC architectures, and gained a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1992. He has designed and installed Active Directory, Windows Server, Exchange, and a range of Windows Clients during his career.

Currently he is the Lead Solution Architect for the Desktop Managed Service offering for Fujitsu Services covering client and server architecture.


Keith Burns

Architect, Microsoft Ltd

Keith is an Architect in the Developer & Platform Evangelism Group at Microsoft Ltd. Having left University with a degree in Computational Chemistry he drifted into the IT Industry. Over the past 20 plus years he has worked for several IT companies and supported a variety of platforms and technologies.

He joined Microsoft in 1993 as a database specialist. Having worked on many multi-terabyte and mission critical database projects over the years he still believes that if it can’t be programmed in ANSI SQL it’s not worth doing. Hobbies consist of renovating an old house, listening to music and attempting to own every new gadget released.


Dave Coplin

Enterprise Strategy Consultant, Microsoft Ltd

Currently engaged as an Enterprise Strategy Consultant, helping Microsoft’s largest customers plan and deliver their IT Strategies in response to their business visions.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Dave worked for KPMG’s internal technology group as the firm’s Director of Global Technology Architecture and was responsible for the creation and evolution of the firm’s global technology architecture with specific responsibility for the creation of KPMG’s IT roadmap.


Simon Cox

Architect, Microsoft Ltd

Simon is the Technical Director of the Southampton Regional e-Science Centre and director of the recently announced Microsoft Institute for High Performance Computing at the University of Southampton. He has a doctorate in Electronics and Computer Science, degrees in Maths and Physics. He currently heads a team that is applying and developing high performance computing in a variety of collaborative interdisciplinary computational science and engineering projects. He holds research funding from government research councils, DTI and industry, in which he is involved in collaborations with Microsoft, DERA, Intel, AMD, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce. He advises the government on future technologies through the EPSRC Technology Watch Panel and is a member of Microsoft UK Architect’s Council. He has been a Microsoft ‘Most Valuable Professional’ in the architecture/ infrastructure area since 2003.


Paul Cross

Architect Evangelist, Microsoft Ltd

Paul is an Architect in the Developer and Platform Group and comes equipped with a healthy cynicism born out of years of coalface development. He has spent the best part of 20 years working in a variety of financial institutions and has architected and developed software on a number of different platforms, ranging from mainframes to today's heterogeneous environments. He specialises in integration technologies and has a peculiar love of plumbing. When not extolling the virtues of .NET, Paul may be found hurtling his ageing body around a rugby pitch and kidding himself that he's actually faster than he was at 21...


Simon Evans

Simon has over five years' experience in architecting enterprise class solutions using Microsoft technologies predominantly in the finance and automotive sectors.  He has been using Scrum and Agile practices for over a year on a large .Net 2.0 based solution. Martin Fowler

Chief Scientist, ThoughtWorks, Inc.

Martin Fowler is the Chief Scientist with ThoughtWorks, Inc., an application development and consulting company serving Global 1000 companies. 

Over the last decade Martin Fowler has pioneered many software development techniques in the development of business information systems. He's well known for his work on OO analysis and design, software patterns, Unified Modelling Language, agile software processes (particularly XP) and refactoring. He is a frequent speaker at international software conferences and edits the design column for IEEE Software Magazine. He is the author of the books: UML Distilled; Refactoring; Planning Extreme Programming; Analysis Patterns and Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture

Although his primary interest has been in software design, he’s never been able to avoid software process.  As such, he has been interested in approaches that allow methodology to fit people, rather than the other way around.  He is considered one of the leading authorities on Agile Methods, such as Extreme Programming, and is a core representative of the Agile Alliance.


Ed Gibson

Chief Security Adviser, Microsoft Ltd

Mr. Gibson is the Chief Security Advisor for Microsoft Ltd, in the UK. His primary role is to serve as an advisor to Microsoft’s customers, and the public, on the work Microsoft is doing to improve the security of its products. This role comes on the heels of his retirement from a 20-year career as a Supervisory Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). During this period, Gibson was a nationally recognized expert in investigating complex, international money laundering schemes, asset confiscation, and intellectual property theft. While assigned to FBI Headquarters, Washington, DC, Gibson developed an operational training program for Special Agents and executive management, in money laundering / asset confiscation investigations still in use today.

From February 2000 – June 2005, Mr. Gibson was assigned to the FBI’s Legat Office, US Embassy London, as an Assistant Legal Attaché. There, he was responsible for all FBI cyber, hi-tech, cyber-terrorism, and infrastructure investigations in the UK. His leadership resulted in the creation of a model cyber program since adopted by all Legat Offices around the world.

Mr. Gibson was a corporate lawyer for a US based multinational corporation prior to the FBI. While assigned to the US Embassy, he qualified as a Solicitor in England and Wales, and completed a two-year computing program at Oxford University. He is also a Member of the Board of the John Grieve Centre for Policing and Community Safety, in England.


Richard Godfrey

Architect Evangelist, Microsoft Ltd

While often excited by new technology, Richard is really passionate about the application of technology to solve complex business problems and, having lived in that world for most of his career, understands both the strategic goals and the tactical activities required to create and deliver high quality business systems.
Since joining Microsoft in 1999, his focus has been to drive the successful adoption of the Microsoft platform in truly ‘Mission Critical’ systems in some of the most significant UK organisations. As a pioneer of the ‘Microsoft Certified Architect’ process Richard also has some useful first-hand experience of the accreditation process to share.


Robert Grigg

Managing Consultant, Conchango plc

Rob has been in software development and architecture for more than 19 years and has extensive experience in the architecture, design and development of large enterprise systems.

Prior to joining Conchango, Rob has held positions as the Head of eBusiness for Enron Europe, Corporate development lead for LIFFE and other positions from solutions architect to lead developer and developer with particular expertise in COM and COM+.

In 2001, Rob joined Conchango where he took up the role of managing consultant within the .NET development and architecture team. During the last 4 years he has lead many projects across a variety of industry verticals. Rob leads Conchango’s .NET architecture community and also heads up the Whidbey and Indigo Ascend programs. Rob is also working along side Michael Horne in managing Conchango’s SQL 2005 TAP activities.

Since 2002, Rob has been a member of the Microsoft .NET Partner Advisory Council and in this capacity works closely with Microsoft to advice on many .NET platform and related technology strategies.

Rob graduated with a 2.1 BSc (Hons) degree in Computer Science with specialism in Compiler design and Applied Cryptography.


Richard Hall

Chief Technology Officer, Avanade UK

Richard Hall joined Avanade UK as Chief Technology Officer in January 2005 having had a wide career in IT strategy and management spanning sixteen years at software vendors and service providers.  As a consultant he has developed application and infrastructure solutions in central government, pharmaceuticals, intelligence, telecoms, retail and utilities with particular focus in investment banking, capital markets and reinsurance sectors.  With clients such as UBS, BAA, Goldman Sachs, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays Capital, Centrica, Halifax Bank of Scotland, Willis, Reuters, BT, Deutsche Bank, French Connection UK, HSBC, Scottish and Newcastle, House of Commons, Tarmac, J. Sainsbury, and Scottish Power.

Most recently Richard managed the Microsoft strategy and relationship at Morse plc, working closely with client Chief Information Officers and board members to deliver practical datacenter class solutions on the Windows technology stack.


Andrew Herbert

Director, Microsoft UK Research Centre

Andrew Herbert is the Managing Director of Microsoft Research in Cambridge, England, where he leads research in distributed computing, operating systems and networks. Initially joining Microsoft Research in 2001 as an Assistant Director, in March 2003 he succeeded the founding director, Roger Needham.

Andrew's research interests include networks, operating systems, programming languages and distributed information sharing.

Prior to joining Microsoft Research in 2001 he was Director of Advanced Technology at Citrix Systems Inc., where he was instrumental in steering the company towards Internet thin-client technologies, initiating development of products for web-based application deployment and for the emerging Application Service Provider market.


Nick Hines

Senior Architect, ThoughtWorks, Inc.

Nick Hines is a Senior Architect at ThoughtWorks, Inc. Nick's experience over the last 20 years in software engineering is in distributed enterprise applications and application integration in complex business domains, primarily in the banking and finance industry. Currently Nick is exploring methods, patterns and tools for the successful exploitation of Domain Driven Design. Nick has been an advocate of automated testing and deployment for many years and is a lifetime convert to the Agile development methodology. Nick holds a degree in Applied Physics from the University of Portsmouth.


Michael Horne

Managing Consultant and Data Warehousing Architect, Conchango plc

Michael has more than 15 years' experience in Information Technology. He possesses extensive knowledge in the field of Data Warehouse design, Business Intelligence, and Decision Support System architecture and implementation.

Prior to joining Conchango, Michael was a development lead for IBM Global Services where he delivered one of the UK’s first X.500 directories for IBM’s one million registered email users.

In 1997 he joined Conchango where his current role is that of managing consultant and data warehousing architect leading the design and delivery of Business Intelligence solutions across a variety of industry verticals. He is leader of Conchango’s SQL Server Community and his work in through the beta program of SQL Server 7 earned Conchango a position on the Microsoft Partner Advisory Council for Business Intelligence. He is currently responsible for coordinating Conchango’s work with SQL Server 2005 and leading Conchango’s participation in the Microsoft Ascend early adopter program.

Since 2003 he has served as a volunteer for the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS). Initially serving as Track Leader for Business Intelligence, since 2004 he has been Program Manager for PASS Europe.

Michael graduated with a First Class master's degree in Engineering Information Technology and a BA (Hons) degree in Systems Analysis.


Richard Hubert

Director of IASA Europe, IASA Director of Education

Richard Hubert received a Master of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1987. He served as director of the Unix Consulting Center for DIGITAL Equipment Corporation in Munich until 1990 when he founded the Interactive Objects Software GmbH (www.io-software.com) which was acquired in 2004. During his 13 years as chief consultant and director at Interactive Objects, he served as chief architect in large national and international projects across diverse industries and as an expert in IT-architecture for the European Commission. In 1997 he received the highest-level certification in Convergent Engineering in San Francisco USA and proceeded to lecture on IT-architecture at the Convergent Engineering Institute. In 2001, he published the world's first book on the OMG's Model Driven Architecture (MDA), the first MDA book selected to bear the OMG-Press seal of quality, where he introduced the concepts of Convergent Architecture and IT-Architectural Style (www.ConvergentArchitecture.com). Richard has recently been recruited as director of the MID GmbH (www.mid.de), a leading provider tools and services for IT-architecture, software engineering and project control.


Dr Ivar Jacobson

Ivar Jacobson International

Ivar Jacobson, is the creator of the Objectory method and is founder of Objectory AB in Sweden. Ivar Jacobson is well known for his pioneering work and over 25 years of experience using object methods for the design of large, real-time systems. His work on large-scale, architected reuse was a key element of the success of Ericsson's AXE telecommunications switch. He is the principal author of two important OO books, Object-Oriented Software Engineering - A Use Case Driven Approach and The Object Advantage: Business Process Reengineering with Object Technology. He is most well known for the invention of the UseCase.


Joel Jeffery

Architectural Evangelist, Capgemini UK plc

Joel is an Architectural Evangelist from the Microsoft Solution Centre at Capgemini UK plc. A globally certified Software Engineer, he has over 20 years' experience in IT and Communications and over a decade in industry.

Joel is the Head of the Microsoft BizTalk Affinity Group at Capgemini and has delivered large scale national and international projects built upon the Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft BizTalk Server for the financial services sector, the public sector and utility companies. His background is in building metadata driven systems, workflow and forms engines. Joel has been doing things the Microsoft way since VB4.

Capgemini is one of Microsoft's top Gold Certified partners with a proud heritage of Adaptive IT, implementing SOA for the best part of a decade.


Steve Jones

Chief Technology Officer, Application Development Transformation

Steve Jones is CTO of Application Development Transformation, member of the OASIS SOA – Reference Mode and Adoption Blueprints groups. Worked on the first NT Beta programme followed by several years in Air Traffic Control systems followed by 7 years of large scale .NET and Java integration projects. Published by the IEEE on service definition and mobile data management Steve has recently released a methodology on SOA via OASIS.


Gareth Jones

Developer, Team Architect, Microsoft Corporation

Gareth Jones is a developer in the Team Architect group of Visual Studio at Microsoft.

He currently works on Tools for Domain Specific Languages. Previously at Microsoft he has been a development manager for bespoke enterprise solutions, lead the development of Microsoft's bCentral UK small business portal and managed a consultancy team focussed on ISVs. Before Microsoft, he lead developments in the intelligence analysis, simulation and aerospace industries.


Stuart Kent

Senior Program Manager, DSL Tools, Microsoft Corporation

Stuart Kent is Program Manager for the DSL Tools team at Microsoft. Before joining Microsoft, he was an academic and consultant for more than 10 years. He was deeply involved in standardization work around UML 2 and MOF 2, and worked with clients such as BT, Nortel Networks and IBM. He held an Industrial Fellowship with the Royal Society, which he interrupted to join Microsoft. He has published widely in refereed journals and conferences, is an associate editor for the Software and Systems Modeling Journal, and recently was general chair for the MoDELS conference. He is currently writing a book on DSL Tools with other members of the DSL Tools team. He holds a PhD in Computing from Imperial College, London.


Stephen Lamb

Technical Security Evangelist, Microsoft Ltd

Stephen Lamb has been a technical security specialist for over ten years working with customers through out Europe. He is passionate about using technology to free people to get on with their work while being confident that their information is secure. He loves presenting to large audiences, helping people make sense of technology and brain storming solutions. Special interest technologies include secure wireless, Rights Management, Application Layer Firewalling, Next Generation Secure Computing Base, client and server security.


Mike Lloyd

Independent Architectural Consultant

Mike Lloyd has over 20 years' experience in systems design and development in such varied sectors as defence, publishing and financial services. His special concerns are remediating failing software projects, introducing effective software development methods and maximising the benefits of IT investments. Where many managers place their trust in methods and processes, Mike is a strong advocate of recognising the quality of individuals as a first-order success factor in any software project.

Mike is a founding member of the Microsoft Architects Council. His hobbies include studying the history of science, which has more parallels with current IT thinking than might at first be apparent.


Andrew Macaulay

Global Architect, Capgemini plc

Andrew, a Capgemini Certified Global Architect, has over 23 years' experience in the IT industry, working across a number of sectors in a variety of roles including Enterprise and Technical Architecture, technical consulting and systems integration, with specific technical skills in enterprise Microsoft and Unix solutions. Andrew is a highly experienced architect and consultant who is used to presenting complex technical solutions at the board-level as well as discussing business and user requirements and translating these into a technical architecture.

Andrew is one of the senior practitioners within Capgemini's global Enterprise Architecture community and an active contributor to the development of Capgemini's architecture capability including Capgemini’s framework (the Integrated Architecture Framework) and learning and certification programmes. Andrew is also an active member of the Open Group's Architecture forum, specifically focusing on IT Architecture Certification, and is a Microsoft Infrastructure Architecture MVP.

Andrew has published a number of papers and has presented on architecture to international audiences.


Giovanni Marchetti

Infrastructure Architect, Microsoft Ltd

Giovanni is an Infrastructure Architect with the Developer & Platform Evangelism team in the UK. He specialises in mission-critical datacenter infrastructure. Previously with IBM and Unisys, he brings to bear 15 years of experience as administrator, consultant and systems architect on a variety of Unix and Microsoft platforms.

He has a MSc. in Electronic Engineering, a MSc. in Intelligent Systems and is also a member of the IEEE.


Dave Morris

Managing Consultant, Conchango plc

Dave has spent the past 18 years working in the design and development of software solutions, specialising in the architecture, design and development of enterprise integration and business process systems.  Prior to joining Conchango, Dave has worked across a wide range of industry sectors including Financial Services, Retail and Healthcare where he was responsible for the delivery of many complex e-commerce and integration solutions.  In 2004, Dave joined Conchango taking up a role in the business process and integration team.  Since then he has lead many integration projects across a variety of industry sectors.  Dave is also a major contributor to Conchango's EAI and BizTalk Community.


Iain Mortimer

Iain Mortimer is an Architect in Microsoft UK Developer and Platform Evangelism Group. Prior to joining Microsoft in June 2005, he held the role of Group Chief Applications Architect for a leading UK Bank.

Iain has worked in IT for twenty years. His interests focus on issues facing Very large Enterprises: Complex systems modernisation, Distributed high volume systems, Enterprise Architectures and Governance.


Eric Nelson

Architectural Engineer, Microsoft Ltd

Eric has been in Microsoft UK for almost 10 years - and has spent most of that time working with UK Independent Software Vendors to help them explore and adopt the latest technologies and tools from Microsoft. Along the way he has made some good friends, met some very smart people, shared very late nights in labs and lived through a variety of development technologies from the Alpha of Active Server Pages 1.0 to the betas of Microsoft Transaction Server and more recently the betas of the Microsoft .NET Framwork – in his opinion the best technology he has worked on – period! Right now his focus is working with ISVs on the betas of SQL Server 2005. Oh - and in case you were wondering - before joining Microsoft he was a Unix developer working exclusively with C and 4GLs writing high performance calculation engines or delivering Line of Business solutions built on top of Sybase, Ingres and other RDBMS packages - and a lot thinner!


Steve Plank

Infrastructure Architect, Microsoft Ltd

Steve Plank is an infrastructure architect working on infrastructure architecture design for customers, and proving the viability of different architectural approaches in POC environments. He is attached to a specialist architectural facility in the UK - the Microsoft Technology Centre - where his experience and skills are brought to bear on challenging infrastructure problems.


Paul Preiss

President, IASA

Paul received a bachelors degree in Japanese from the University of Texas at Austin. He went on to become a project manager for Human Code. Later, Paul was the Applications Manager and Architect for Dell Pan Asia based in Kawasaki, Japan. He then became the Sr. Architect for a software consulting firm in St Paul Minnesota, where he provided architecture consulting for numerous government and private enterprise clients. Paul went on to become the Director of Engineering and Chief Architect of a digital asset management company. More recently Paul has spent most of his time creating and managing the International Association of Software Architects.


Ian Race

CIO ASG, Barclays Bank plc

Ian has worked for Barclays Bank plc for nearly the last 18 years during which time he has worked on systems on many of the Banks different platforms, IBM Mainframes, Tandem, Unix, Telephony Switches, IVRs, ATMs, Networks and various Windows systems concentrating in recent years on infrastructure issues and architecture.

Ian is a founder member of the Microsoft Architects Council.

Originally trained as a Chemist at Sheffield University, Ian worked for five and a half years in industrial ceramics before re-training into Systems Analysis at Bolton Institute of Higher Education on a TOPS course. Ian then joined Royal Life Insurance for four and a half years using IMS DB/DC systems and PL/1 before moving to Barclays.


Howard van Rooijen

Senior Technology Consultant, Conchango plc

Howard is a Senior Technology Consultant with Conchango plc; he is also a Certified Scrum Master and an Agile Alliance member. Howard has been involved in architecting and developing projects for retail, finance and the automotive industry and architected a globally deployed e-learning tool for Microsoft UK. His current areas of interest are automated build processes (Continuous Integration), code metrics, engineering practices enforcement tools and code generation. Anthony Saxby

Anthony has over 20 years' experience in the computer industry, specialising in the areas of application development, software engineering and distributed systems architectures, based upon Microsoft platform technologies. Anthony has worked on large projects in Retail, Financial Services and Government, covering application areas ranging from B2C Commerce solutions in the Financial Services industry through to large scale Integration projects in the Government sector. At Microsoft, Anthony manages the Enterprise Systems Strategy and Architecture Consulting Practice as well as acting as Chief Technology Officer for Microsoft Services in the UK. Anthony's current areas of focus are enterprise architecture innovations including Service Oriented Architectures, Web Services and Grid/Utility computing and also innovations into approaches for more effectively aligning IT projects to business objectives.


Tamer Shaaban

Tamer is a senior integration consultant at Conchango plc. He has over ten years of experience integrating enterprise systems. Tamer is also a certified scrum master and pioneered "Agile Project Management and Architecture for Integration Projects."  Tamer specialises in integrating .Net solutions with ERP and CRM systems as well as implementing SOA and ESB architecture. Tamer has successfully designed and implemented large retail, finance, and travel projects implementing industry standard integration solutions using various technologies.


David Sprott

David Sprott is founder and CEO of the CBDI Forum, a research organisation and think tank specialising in services and component architectures and practices.

Simon Thurman

Simon is an Architect in the Developer Group. Over the past 14 years he has architected and developed software on mainframes, client server architectures and the Internet. Such memorable software includes: ensuring that you have the correct address, routing algorithms, and streamlining the house moving process. Today at Microsoft he helps customers do good things with new technology.

The rest of his time is spent with his wife and daughters and mountain biking.


Peter Williams

Architect, Microsoft Ltd

Peter Williams is currently working as an Architect for Microsoft Ltd working on large scale solutions for enterprise customers. He is an experienced MSF practitioner, an MSF Elder and led the development of the process assessment for team based software development.

He has held a number of positions within Microsoft including:

  • Development manager for the Microsoft Solution Development Centre.
  • Lead Software Design Engineer.
  • Principle Application Development Consultant.
  • Software design engineer in the SQL Server development group based in Redmond, USA

Angela Yochem

Vice President, SunTrust Bank

Angela Yochem is Vice President in the technology division at one of the United States' largest commercial banking organizations with assets totaling over $170 billion and deposits exceeding $113 billion. Ms. Yochem established the Portfolio Architecture practice, and oversees architectural health, maintenance of disciplines and transformation based on the needs of business, corporate technology and budget objectives. She is responsible for enterprise technical direction and standards, and works with the lines of business to establish strategies to drive continuous efficiency for the top-ten bank.

Ms. Yochem joined the bank from the world's largest package delivery company, a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. Ms. Yochem specialized in the design and delivery of large-scale distributed systems and solutions to complex integration and convergence challenges. Her background includes extensive B2B and B2C commerce architectural work for the world's largest information technology company, systems design for the defense industry, and network design and management of a multi-campus network with over 5,000 managed nodes.

Ms. Yochem is a recognized contributor to the technical community and serves on several Atlanta Georgia based boards. She is a member of the elite Working Group associated with the International Association of Software Architects defining architecture taxonomy, and is an IASA Fellow. She is a published author (J2EE Applications and WebLogic Server, Prentice-Hall, 2004, and SOA and EDA: Case Studies, Addison-Wesley, 2006), and is a regular speaker at events and executive forums around the United States.

Ms. Yochem received a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance from DePauw University and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee, where she is designated a Distinguished Alumni of the department.
