Designer Academic Alliance Usage Guidelines

Students who are currently enrolled in at least one course in the member department may install the software on their personal computers. Students who are in a member department but are not currently enrolled in courses that lead to credit or a certificate are not eligible to obtain Designer AA software for their personal computers.
An organization that has Faculty and/or Students currently teaching or taking one or more Visualization, Illustration, Design, and Art (VIDA) courses may purchase a Designer AA Membership and distribute Designer AA software to the current VIDA Faculty and Students within their organization. An organization that has Faculty and/or Students teaching or taking Visualization, Illustration, Design, and Art (VIDA) courses may purchase a Designer AA Membership but may notdistribute Designer AA software to any members of their organization who are not currently enrolled in one or more VIDA courses.
The tools and technologies provided through the Designer AA Membership may be used exclusively for academic instruction, academic projects, and non-commercial research only. The software that is part of the membership may not be used for any IT infrastructure or administration purposes at the Designer AA member’s school, university, foundation, or organization.
All users of software provided through Designer AA are prohibited from using Designer AA software for commercial purposes. Any product created with Designer AA software may be offered or used commercially only after the purchase of appropriate commercial licenses of any and all software products used during the product’s creation.
Departmental faculty members as well as staff directly involved in administering dedicated Designer AA systems and providing support for Designer AA software may install the software on their personal computers. Department, Faculty, or Staff members who are not directly involved with teaching or system administration related to Designer AA may not install the software on their personal computers.
Microsoft Windows may only be installed to facilitate the use of other Designer AA software and technologies such as Microsoft Visual Studio for instruction or research. Under Designer AA: Windows clients may not be used only as a terminal for accessing a UNIX telnet server. Windows Server may not be used to host an e-mail server even if the e-mail software was purchased separately.
The underlying Microsoft Windows desktop operating system may only be installed on new or replacement PCs acquired without an operating system for exclusive use by students or faculty enrolled in or employed by the member Department or organization; it is not transferable and must be removed if the PC is transferred. The underlying Microsoft Windows desktop operating system may not be installed on new or replacement PCs acquired without an operating system for use by non-member Departments or organizations; it may not be transferred to non-member Departments or organizations, even if that PC is retired or no longer in use by the member Department or organization.
Multiple departments in an institution may purchase Designer AA if each department meets the qualifying requirements. Software that is part of the program may not be shared with non-member departments. However, it may be installed on shared labs for use by member department students only. If member department students cease to use the shared labs the software must be removed.
Member departments may install Designer AA software on all machines owned by their department. Member Departments should not install Designer AA software on Departmental machines with the intent of transferring them to a Non-Designer AA department. If a machine with Designer AA software is transferred to a non-member Department, the Designer AA software must first be removed. All software obtained through Designer AA is covered by the Designer AA Supplemental License regardless of where the software is installed. Organizations and Departments that provide software to faculty and students should not install Designer AA software on shared machines unless they feel that they can enforce the License.
The designated program administrator must be an employee of the member department or organization and is responsible for administering, managing, and enforcing the guidelines set by the MSDN End-User License Agreement (EULA) and the Designer AA Supplemental License. The designated program administrator (PA) for the member department may not be a student or someone not employed by the department or organization. However, students may help the PA administer the program.
Every copy of the software must be a true and complete copy and it must include all copyright and trademark notices. All software made available must include all of the files on the media. The software provided by Designer AA may not be sold, rented, leased, or transferred to any third party including contractors, consultants, other companies, and other department personnel. This includes entities projects.
The program administrator must authorize any access to the Member’s Area of the Designer AA Web site by other faculty members with the department. Only qualified members may have access to Designer AA product keys. The program administrator (PA) may not allow any other faculty members or students to place orders for additional product keys on the Designer AA Web site. Designer AA product keys may not be sold, distributed, traded or given to anyone outside the qualified department or organization.
If a department decides not to renew their Designer AA membership, they must destroy the copies of the software in their possession; break all connections with existing Microsoft Designer AA software distribution methods, and stop providing the software and product keys to students and faculty. However, the students and faculty may continue to use the software installed prior to the membership’s expiration in accordance with the EULA. Departments and organizations may no longer provide Designer AA software to their students and faculty after their Designer AA membership has expired or terminated.
